After years away from Hollywood, Emma Watson is opening up about why she chose to step back from acting — and why the decision ultimately changed her life for the better.
The actress, who was recently spotted at the Cannes Film Festival, sparked speculation that she may be preparing for a return to the spotlight. But in a rare interview with Hollywood Authentic, Watson revealed that her time away from acting has been deeply personal and necessary.
Watson, now 35, hasn’t appeared on screen since 2019’s Little Women. Reflecting on her years in the industry after rising to fame through the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone franchise, she admitted that the business side of Hollywood eventually became exhausting.
“In some ways I really won the lottery with acting,” Watson explained. “But a bigger component than the actual job itself is the promotion and selling of that piece of work. I’ll be honest — I do not miss selling things. I found that to be quite soul-destroying.”
While she misses the craft itself, Watson said the pressure surrounding fame became overwhelming. She described acting as an almost meditative experience, especially during emotionally intense scenes, but said the constant scrutiny and expectations took a toll.
“The moment the camera rolls, and you completely forget about everything else in the world — it’s such an intense form of meditation,” she shared. “I miss that profoundly. But I don’t miss the pressure.”
Watson also revealed that stepping away allowed her to focus on rebuilding her personal life after years of nonstop work.
“I think I worked so hard for so long that my life sort of bottomed out,” she said candidly. “The bottom fell out of the piece which was actually me and my life. So I needed to go and do some construction work.”
According to Watson, creating stability outside of Hollywood became essential. She explained that constantly moving from one project to another left little room for balance or fulfillment in her everyday life.
“I needed to rebuild a rhythm to my life,” she said. “Each day has to have satisfaction and meaning in itself.”
Although she admitted the decision to walk away felt frightening at the time, Watson now believes it was the right move.
“Walking away from things is much harder than walking towards things,” she explained. “Sometimes the hard thing is the right thing.”
These days, Watson says she feels healthier and happier than ever. She also reflected on how fame can force actors to maintain multiple versions of themselves — both onscreen and in public life.
“Shedding the multiple identities has freed up so much space,” she said, adding that the change has allowed her to be more present as a sister, daughter, friend, and artist.
As for whether she’ll eventually return to Hollywood — or even move behind the camera — Watson isn’t ruling anything out just yet.
“I think I’d consider everything,” she teased.
